Soldier of the Month - Ft. Sam Houston

She was put up for soldier of the month in April but withdrew because she didn't think she was ready. Tonight, after a board of Drill Sargeants named her soldier of the month for May, she said that she "sucked." Maybe she has higher standards than most.

As if that is a surprise.

She's a little bit of a perfectionist, eh? Hmmmmm?

Just another one of the many things I love about her.

Joan, I hope you get this reply - you have your profile set to private, so I can't find a way to answer you directly.

The first week is reception. He won't have a permanent address until he ships out to his actual BCT platoon - usually one week after he arrives, but give or take a couple of days. I know that's frustrating, but the platoons aren't pre-assigned, it's luck of the draw as they get off the bus. They'll be put into lines and sorted on the spot.

He should get a chance to use the phone in his first couple of days. It's hard to get through, though, because he'll have to stand in line with everybody else to share the too-few phones and he'll only have a few minutes. I had a phone card that took approx. 2 minutes of my time on every call because it played a bunch of freakin' commercials - made me nuts!

Do write him, often - it helps us so very much - and encourage everybody you know to send him little bits - it doesn't have to be much, even a postcard, everything helps. It broke my heart when some of the people in my platoon never heard from anybody.

Tell him good luck from an old lady who survived. They'll be tough on him, but they have to. We have to be strong to survive.

I Sam I found you at random. I was wondering if you could help me. I have a son who has been at Ft Sam Houston since June 7, he was held over and will be starting class tomorrow. The website gives very limited information. My son says they will be there 4.5 months. I am starting now looking for graduation information. I did get to talk to my son by cell phone until tonight. He says the can't have cellphones unless there on their own time which I am assuming is going to be very limited. Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
